Russia’s recent troop buildup near the Ukrainian border has gotten everybody’s attention. It raised fears of a possible fresh Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine and it caused the US European Command to raise its alert status to the highest level.
But the Russian buildup near Ukraine is not happening in isolation. As listeners of this podcast no doubt know, it comes amidst a qualitative change in Russia’s force posture on its Western frontier, most notably in Kaliningrad, and beyond its Western frontier, in Belarus.
